Riverside University Health System – Medical Center (RUHS – MC) ranks among the top 3% of medical centers nationally for social responsibility, according to an index from a nonprofit dedicated to equitable access to healthcare.

The Medical Center was ranked 77 out of 2,758 hospitals according to the Lown Institute Hospitals Index for Social Responsibility. The ranking was tabulated by looking at the hospital’s performance in such areas as equity, value and outcomes.

RUHS-MC also received an “A” grade in several subcategories including community benefit, avoiding overuse of tests and procedures, inclusivity, cost efficiency, patient safety and clinical outcomes.

“It’s great to see the Medical Center ranked so highly,” said Dr. Alexandra Clark, Chief Medical Officer for RUHS-MC. “Our phenomenal team of providers, nurses and medical staff works tirelessly to ensure this institution stands as a beacon for quality medical care for everyone in our community. These rankings are yet another reminder of that.”

The Lown Institute is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit think tank that frequently advocates for health equity and improved healthcare for Americans. The Institute has led dialogue on overtreatment, pioneered research into unnecessary care and developed a risk adjustment tool for improved patient outcomes.

The index is the first to evaluate hospitals in the area of social responsibility. It uses 54 metrics to determine hospital performance. The project is largely self-funded, thanks to a grant provided by the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation. The Palo Alto-based foundation supports causes related to environmental conservation, scientific discovery and patient care.
