RUHS/ UCR General Surgery
Our People, Our Patients, Our Future.
The program’s motto is that the future is now and we are creating it in our innovative and comprehensive fully ACGME-accredited General Surgery Residency program.
With education as our primary focus, the General Surgery Residency emphasizes a combination of strong clinical experiences augmented by weekly teaching conferences, weekly basic science conferences, monthly journal clubs and weekly departmental grand rounds and an innovative skills lab.
To make your surgical education a rewarding and enriching experience, we are partnering with state-of-the-art hospitals, progressive clinics and dedicated and knowledgeable physicians. These include:
Our program, which is accredited for 4 residents at each level with an additional 4 preliminary residents in the PGY-1 year and 2 preliminary residents in the PGY-2 year, seeks to prepare residents to become surgeons of the highest caliber. We strive to accomplish this by providing each resident with a rich educational experience in a variety of clinical settings.
The three main program components - curriculum, research, and service - are structured to enable the resident to acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and clinical judgment needed for the practice of general surgery. Residents can benefit greatly from the wealth of teaching expertise and clinical experience provided throughout their training and experience.
Our goal is early exposure to the operating room and progressive autonomy from intern year to the chief resident year. As such, our PGY-1 residents log between 150 to 200 cases on average in their first year of training and begin to perform operations such as laparoscopic appendectomies and cholecystectomies after they have mastered the simulator training. The program utilizes the state-of art simulator as part of the skills curriculum throughout the training of the residents. The residents also get a broad and extensive experience in trauma and acute care surgery at RUHS Medical Center which is one of the busiest trauma centers in the area and is accredited by the American College of Surgeons.
The RUHS / UCR General Surgery Residency Program has a strong commitment to the underserved population of Riverside County. Making a positive impact on a large multi-cultural population gives our residents rewarding experiences that will follow them for a lifetime. Our goal is to train exceptional surgeons who upon completion of their training would stay or return to this area and serve this community.
We want you to enjoy your visit to the General Surgery Residency Program website and hope that it inspires you to want to learn more about our program offerings, our institutions, and what gives General Surgery Residency Education at RUHS its sense of purpose and mission.
