Benzodiazepines
What are benzodiazepines?
Benzodiazepines, or “benzos”, are central nervous system depressants that slow brain activity. They’re prescribed to treat anxiety, panic, acute stress reactions, and sleep disorders. Use, even when prescribed by a doctor, and misuse can lead to substance use disorder (SUD).
Benzodiazepines and Opioids
Taking opioids with benzodiazepines can increase the risk of overdose because both types of drugs can cause sedation and suppress breathing, which causes overdose fatality.
