Anesthesiology PGY 1

Goals

The Department of Anesthesiology will provide a learning environment for the management and care of a patients undergoing general anesthesia. Clinically, residents will address anesthesia administration pre-operatively, develop clinical judgment on managing this issue, and learn skills to address the use of anesthesia. Careful post-operative care and follow up will be emphasized.

Objectives

Medical Knowledge:

  • Basic knowledge of pharmacology, physiology and clinical use of local anesthetics including the different esters and amides.
  • Basic knowledge of upper and lower airway anatomy: in operating room suite verbal discourse
  • Basic knowledge of induction agents
  • Basic knowledge of muscle relaxants
  • Basic knowledge of opioids (duration, dose
  • Basic knowledge of ventilator management
  • Basic knowledge of fluid management

Patient Care:

  • Obtain the ability to professionally perform a pre-operative evaluation and consent for anesthesia
  • Obtain the ability to classify the airway
  • Obtain the ability to mask ventilate a patient after induction
  • Obtain the ability to perform and gain competency in non-complex endotracheal intubation
  • Obtain the ability to perform an intravenous catheterization
  • Obtain the ability to perform invasive monitoring, using sterile technique (Central venous access, arterial catheterization)

Practice Based Learning and Improvement:

  • Demonstrate ability to analyze performance of the day's procedures / anesthetics given and suggest areas for improvement.
  • Improve their skill and efficiency in the anesthetic management over the course of the rotation.
  • Demonstrate facility in using electronic databases, literature retrieval services, and computer-based diagnostic reasoning programs to facilitate decision-making in the surgical setting
  • Develop an attitude of responsibility for the patients on the recovery room, and in so doing develop the skill of self-assessment with the goal of continuous improvement in practice management style.
  • Understand the importance of significantly reading and discussing medical literature pertinent to patients on the service.
  • Complete the Personal Learning Project as outlined in the PBLI curriculum

Interpersonal Skill and Communication:

  • Communicate an organized, accurate, and detailed evaluation to the faculty anesthesiologist and the recovery room nurse.
  • Develop the ability to communicate with attending anesthesiologists, surgeons, and nursing staff the critical information needed to provide safe perioperative care.
  • Be able to communicate with patients and families effectively, such that their natural apprehension surrounding anesthesia and surgery is allayed.
  • Discuss patient's fears regarding general anesthesia

Professionalism:

  • Treat all patients and families with respect and compassion, and interact appropriately with all staff.
  • Display respect, compassion, and integrity in dealing with patients and all member of the healthcare team, and display sensitivity to age, gender, culture, and disability
  • Identify and assist with the psychological stress of patients with chronic pain disease such as RSD it affects their personal life, their family life, and their socioeconomic environment.
  • Complete the Professional in Surgery curriculum for the current month

System Based Practice:

  • Contribute to smooth functioning of the operating room and recovery room.
  • Be able to work effectively within the structure of the operating room and its environs while respecting the roles and contributions of all who work there.
  • Demonstrate understanding of medical delivery systems as they relate to both inpatient and outpatient resources.
  • Work well with multidisciplinary teams, coordinating care and effectively working with anesthesiologists, nurse anesthetists and other providers in a team setting.
  • Complete the SBP curriculum as scheduled.
