I am pleased to welcome you to the RUHS Neurology Residency. Our program provides residents a close-knit, supportive and collegial learning environment with ample opportunity for one on one teaching with faculty. The program faculty are comprised of fellowship trained neurologists who are dedicated to medical education and provide excellent specialty care to our diverse community. With a range of subspeciality expertise and backgrounds, the faculty provide exposure to all major areas of neurology. The program's comprehensive clinical experience is complemented by our formal educational opportunities including weekly didactics half days and Neuroscience Grand Rounds. The resident's clinical and academic experiences are broadened by rotations at nearby Loma Linda University Medical Center. Neurology residents are part of the robust Graduate Medical Education community at RUHS. During our four-year program residents train alongside colleagues in Neurosurgery, Internal Medicine, Radiology, Psychiatry, Family Medicine and others. This multidisciplinary environment promotes collaboration, teamwork, and comprehensive patient care. RUHS is located in sunny Southern California, with convenient access to downtown Los Angeles, Orange County, beaches, and the mountains, while offering a more affordable cost of living than many surrounding areas. Internal Medicine

Our residency builds on a foundation of well-established Graduate Medical Education at RUHS and is designed to support and foster collaboration and integrative care in a safety net healthcare environment. More than 160,000 procedures were performed in the last year touching all modalities and specialties. Our patient population is extremely diverse and faces complex medical and socioeconomic challenges. The Medical Center in Moreno Valley, California has 439 licensed beds. It is a Level I Trauma Center with a stroke designation. The hospital also features a research office, CECORC - Comparative Effectiveness and Clinical Outcomes Research Center, that is available to support resident scholarly activity. Moreno Valley, is centrally located in Riverside County in Southern California and is close to beaches and mountains while offering a low cost of living. The nearby Ontario National Airport allows for convenient travel options without the size and crowds of Los Angeles International airport. The Internal Medicine staff is committed to the patients, residents and the larger Medical Center community. We emphasize attention to detail, appropriate supervision, the careful use of resources and excellent patient care. General Surgery Residency

To make your surgical education a rewarding and enriching experience, we partner with state-of-the-art hospitals, progressive clinics, and dedicated, knowledgeable physicians across five training sites: - Riverside University Health System (RUHS) Medical Center - Kaiser Permanente Riverside - Kaiser Permanente Moreno Valley - Children's Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) - Loma Linda University Medical Center (LLUMC) Our program is accredited for 4 residents at each level, with an additional 4 preliminary residents in the PGY-1 year and 2 preliminary residents in the PGY-2 year. We seek to prepare residents to become surgeons of the highest caliber by providing a rich, hands-on educational experience across this variety of clinical settings. The three main program components — curriculum, research, and service — are structured to help residents acquire the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and clinical judgment needed for the practice of general surgery. Residents benefit from a deep well of teaching expertise and clinical experience throughout their training. Our goal is early exposure to the operating room and progressive autonomy from intern year through the chief resident year. PGY-1 residents have logged between 100 and 200 cases on average over the past five years. The program uses a state-of-the-art simulator as part of the skills curriculum throughout training, and residents gain broad, extensive experience in trauma and acute care surgery at RUHS Medical Center — one of the busiest trauma centers in the area and an American College of Surgeons–accredited center. The RUHS/UCR General Surgery Residency Program has a strong commitment to the underserved population of Riverside County. Making a positive impact on a large, multicultural population gives our residents rewarding experiences that stay with them for a lifetime. Our goal is to train exceptional surgeons who, upon completing their training, choose to stay in or return to this area to serve this community. Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship

The Riverside University Health System (RUHS) Forensic Psychiatry Fellowship Program trains psychiatrists who are intellectually curious, eager to contribute to the wellness of underserved communities and committed to the pursuit of justice for individuals who experience severe mental illness. Offering clinical experiences in correctional psychiatry within the jail, state hospital and medical center environments, fellows are exposed to the mechanics of clinical psychiatry within the custodial setting. Our program focuses on the mastery of forensic report writing and testimony with rigorous emphasis on historical judicial precedent, communication skills, the history of psychiatry and the ethics of forensic psychiatry. We also offer exposure to the practice of forensic psychiatry in civil proceedings through fellow mentorship of other learners and testimony offered in a forensic capacity. We cater to and strengthen each fellow's personal interests and foster independence and confidence in the field.

Located in the heart of the Inland Empire, RUHS Medical Center serves one of the most dynamic and rapidly growing regions in California. This environment provides fellows with exposure to a uniquely diverse patient population and a broad spectrum of endocrine pathology across all stages of disease. As a safety-net academic medical center, RUHS is deeply committed to equitable, high-quality care. The complexity of cases — ranging from advanced thyroid malignancies and pituitary disorders to brittle diabetes and metabolic bone disease — ensures comprehensive and high-volume clinical training. Fellows are exposed to an exceptional breadth of endocrine pathology that fosters diagnostic precision and therapeutic confidence. Endocrinology at RUHS operates in close partnership with multiple medical and surgical disciplines, including neurosurgery, otolaryngology (ENT), surgical oncology, maternal-fetal medicine, radiology, and nuclear medicine. Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine

My name is Gary R. Stier, MD MBA and it is a privilege to serve as the Chair and the Residency Program Director of the Department of Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine and to oversee the growing contributions it offers to both the Riverside University Health System-Medical Center (RUHS-MC) healthcare organization as well as to the surrounding community which it serves.

First, let me share a short overview of the hospital. RUHS-MC has a storied history, dating back to 1893 when the hospital served as the Riverside County’s first general hospital. Today, RUHS-MC continues its service as the referral hospital for Riverside County. RUHS-MC is a 439-bed acute tertiary-care referral hospital and a Level 1 trauma center located in Moreno Valley, CA, about 60 miles east of Los Angeles. RUHS-MC includes 60+ hospital-based primary and specialty care clinics in addition to being the only pediatric intensive care unit within Riverside County. RUHS has been named a Top Performer in key quality measures by the Joint Commission.  

Through our efforts to embrace the RUHS Mission of “improving the health and well-being of its patients and communities through dedication to exceptional and compassionate care, education, and research”, the department is growing and expanding, both in the clinical services it provides to RUHS-MC as well as the growth of the residency program.  The department is fortunate to have a deep bench of skilled faculty committed to the delivery of high-quality, evidence-based, patient-centered clinical care and in resident education and mentorship. Important department goals include expanding the clinical footprint in the areas of perioperative medicine, pain management, quality & safety, point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS), and clinical research. To better meet these goals, the department is expanding the residency complement, recruiting additional faculty, and working closely with the hospital in rolling out unique programs which will facilitate better clinical care and enhance the educational environment for the residents; these efforts will better position the graduates for the rapidly changing and evolving national healthcare environment.

The residency program is a fully ACGME-accredited anesthesiology training program with 40 resident positions. The residents receive substantial experience in all areas of anesthesiology, particularly within the areas of regional anesthesia and perioperative medicine. The residency program is closely affiliated with Cedars Sinai Medical Center and Los Angeles Children’s Hospital (CHLA), two of the top-rated hospitals in the nation. These training sites offer experiences in the areas of pediatric anesthesia, cardiothoracic critical care, cardiothoracic anesthesia, and pain management. Time spent in these facilities provides enhanced opportunities to secure fellowship training within those institutions and within the nation. Clinical research opportunities are expanding due to the growth of our research team and departmental commitment to scholarly activity.

The department believes that the future of the specialty must include enhanced training in perioperative medicine, care coordination, and in leadership skills. Within the area of perioperative medicine, the department is fortunate to have 5 faculty members board-certified in Internal Medicine and Anesthesiology, providing the educational foundation for superior training in perioperative care. In addition, the department has created an ambulatory perioperative medicine clinic with the goal of assessing, medically optimizing, and coordinating care of high-risk patients undergoing complex surgeries and procedures. The clinic objective is to ensure the delivery of patient-centered care and favorable outcomes that align well with value-based healthcare delivery models. Other anesthesiology subspecialties represented within the department and include pain management, regional anesthesia, critical care, neurocritical care, and addiction medicine.  

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) are important principles embraced by the Dept and are integrated within the didactic teaching activities, faculty recruitment strategies, and  by involvement in  social programs and activities, particularly within the local communities. The Dept works closely with RUHS organization in supporting DEI institutional policies and programs.

Finally, many of our faculty and residents are active within national, state, and regional medical societies which provide opportunities for medical advocacy efforts, professional networking, career advancement, and in assuring that the department kept abreast of important issues faced within the specialty and in healthcare nationally.
