Letter from the Program Director

The residency is centered at the Medical Center with nearby rotations at Loma Linda Children's Hospital to increase pediatric experience and Arrowhead Regional Medical Center to provide additional perspectives on Emergency Radiology. All residents will be provided a 4-week rotation at the American Institute for Radiologic Pathology. Didactic lectures and tumor board are scheduled every Tuesday with protected research time on Tuesday afternoons.

The Medical Center, located in Moreno Valley, has 439 acute care hospital beds. It has stroke designation, moving towards a clot retrieval facility and is a level I trauma facility. The hospital boasts a research center, CECORC – Comparative Effectiveness and Clinical Outcomes Research Center – that is also available to support resident scholarly activity.

Moreno Valley, in Riverside County, is centrally located in Southern California with access to the beach and the mountains and a lower cost of living than exists in Orange County or San Diego. A nearby airport, Ontario International, allows for convenient travel options without the size and crowds of Los Angeles International Airport.

Year-by-year training structure and rotation schedule

What to Expect: Clinical Year Interns are exposed to a wide variety of fundamental rotations selected to increase clinical skills and training but also to provide a solid foundation to their future role as Radiologists. Where to Go: All rotations will take place at RUHS Medical Center and Interns return for Tuesday Journal Club meetings and assorted wellness activities. Included Rotations: Rotations include: Emergency Medicine, Gastroenterology, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, MICU, Neurology, Neurosurgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Orthopaedic Surgery, Pediatrics, Radiology, Vascular Surgery. During this year Interns will also have the ability to work with others that will become their peers and colleagues during the remainder of their training at RUHS Medical Center. Wednesday Afternoon Conferences: Interns join the Internal Medicine Residents on Wednesday afternoons for ongoing educational lectures that contribute to the broad foundation of medical knowledge planned for the Clinical Year.

Educational Resources

Tuesday Radiology Resident Conference and Research Day

Tuesday is designated for lecture, tumor board and research. Faculty led lectures are scheduled each Tuesday from 7:00 or 8:00 am until noon each Tuesday. Resident/Faculty led didactic lectures occur twice per month within the Tuesday morning schedule. The curriculum will covers all aspects of imaging and include lectures on the business of radiology, performing research, quality and safety, diversity and wellness. Residents participate in Tumor Board from 12:30-1:30 pm. The remainder of Tuesday afternoon is protected research time. Best case of the week sharing will be ongoing.

Physics Onsite Didactic course

Ongoing physics education occurs as part of the Tuesday morning lectures. Education will be provided by dedicated physicist via Zoom lectures and online study material. Review course prior to the "Core Examination" will be optional.

Journal Club

Journal Club meets the second Thursday of every month following the resident's dedicated research time. Topics and attending faculty will vary according to current topics, interests and planned research.

Interdisciplinary Conferences

Residents are encouraged and given time to attend interdisciplinary conferences. In addition to tumor board, Neurosurgery Grand Rounds, Neuroradiology Grand Rounds, Hospital Grand Rounds are routinely scheduled. Conference expansion into stroke case review, skull base tumor board and interdisciplinary chest conferences is planned. Residents are also encouraged to attend and in later years present educational lectures to our Internal Medicine and Family Medicine residents.

Electronic Support

Residents receive an iPad to facilitate independent study as well as access to Rad Primer and e-anatomy on an ongoing basis. RSNA physics modules and additional electronic learning opportunities including courses in informatics are available based on resident year.

National Society Memberships

Residents have memberships in the American College of Radiology (ACR), Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) and American Roentgen Ray Society (ARRS).

AIRP

Residents receive the opportunity to attend the 4-week ACR Instittue for Radiologic Pathology AIRP course with tuition paid by the program.
