Maternal Child & Adolescent Health/Public Health Nursing
PHN/MCAH strives to help the entire community including mothers, fathers, children, adolescents, adults, and seniors. We offer a variety of programs that help improve the health and wellness of all Riverside County residents.
PHN/MCAH has a diverse, multi-disciplinary team of Public Health Nurses, Social Workers, Health Educators and Health Service Assistants dedicated to serving our communities.
PHN/MCAH offers support groups for pregnant women, home visiting services supporting the needs of newly pregnant/parenting mothers, fathers and teens. We also offer supportive services for adults and seniors with the goal of helping individuals and families achieve desired health outcomes. Our services support (Include) women in having healthy babies, seek to ensure children grow and develop both socially and emotionally, while also fostering positive parent/child relationships. Our programs support wellness throughout the entire lifespan (totally free of cost) and there is no cost for any of our services.
Mission
To empower the entire community in preventing disease and promoting optimum wellness for individuals and families of Riverside County utilizing evidenced based knowledge from nursing, social, and public health science. With an equity lens, we partner with the community to achieve positive health outcomes for individuals, and families throughout Riverside County.

- Perinatal Equity Initiative

In 2018, recognizing an alarming statewide gap in Black infant mortality, the state Legislature passed the Budget Act of 2018 which included the establishment of the California Perinatal Equity Initiative (PEI) within the Department of Public Health.
- Sudden Infant Death Syndrome

SIDS is the sudden unexplained death of an infant under one year of age. We still do not know what causes SIDS. To diagnose a death as SIDS, three things must happen. The infant must undergo a complete autopsy, a thorough death scene investigation will be done, and a review of the clinical history of the infant will be completed.
- Cal-Learn Program

Cal-Learn is a statewide program for pregnant teens or parents under the age of 19 who receive economic assistance from CalWORKS to help with childcare, transportation, school expenses, and a $500 bonus upon graduation.
- Enhanced Children Services (EMS) under Public Health

The Enhanced Medical Services (EMS) Program is a collaboration between Riverside University Health System (RUHS) and the Department of Public Social Services (DPSS).
- Health Care Program for Children in Foster Care

The Public Health Nurses (PHNs) with the Health Care Program for Children in Foster Care (HCPCFC) assist in the case coordination of children in out of home placement/foster care. The PHNs collaborate with the child's social worker/probation officer to plan and coordinate health services.
- Wraparound Program

As part of the Wraparound team, the PHN provides services for the youth in collaboration with Probation, Behavioral/Mental Health departments. The PHN works towards identifying the health-related needs of the clients and their families. Using a strengths-based approach, the PHN also provides community resources to clients as needed.
